... I was just a soldier. I didn't have any officer training or anything like that.

... what I was trained to do was to follow orders, care for my weapons, and how to eliminate hostile targets with those weapons. We relied on our telepathy with each other to coordinate. There are a lot of factors with how the LDC operated that wouldn't help at all.
